York County Cider
We sat down with Ed Teale, owner of York County Cider, in his beautiful new tap room on Main Street in Fredericton to chat about his products, his new location and his…garage?
So let’s start with…why the move?
We needed more space. Our old location was just over 1,000 square feet, and we couldn’t keep up with orders. We needed more space to make more cider. We didn’t have room for a tap room – that wasn’t even part of the cider dream at first!
How long have you been making cider?
It started as a hobby almost thirty years ago, making cider in my home. After a few trips to the UK over the years to taste a variety of ciders, and working to refine my own flavours, I felt it was ready to share. It also has become evident that cider has been ‘discovered’ in North America, and is increasing in popularity. In March 2016 we opened the business on York Street downtown, and we were in that location until December of last year when we opened here on Main Street.
And now you’re in the new – and may I say very cool – location on Main Street. How’s it going?
It’s been great! We are definitely getting a lot more traffic here than we were at the old location. In fact, our first week here was better than our best week ever downtown on York Street. We have so much more space to offer events for the community to enjoy, and we are very excited about our patio.
Any concerns about not being in central downtown anymore?
Not at all – the Northside has been incredibly welcoming. People are so supportive. We’re right in their back yard, and they’re telling us they are thrilled they can simply walk here. The tap room is right across from the trail, so people can bike from anywhere in town. There is ample parking here. We look forward to a lot of pedestrian, bike and car traffic in the summer, when we’ll swing open our garage doors out to the patio.
Let’s talk about what you have at the bar?
We have 10 of our ciders and a few beers on tap. We will eventually have 10 beers featuring many excellent local craft breweries. We also serve wine, and non-alcohol beverages – something to suit everyone’s tastes. At ANBL, you can find our In the Beginning (dry), Sweet William (semi-dry), Like an Academic (blueberry) and Ginger Snap (ginger) ciders. Our most recent addition at ANBL is the Strawberry Ciderita (strawberry lime) cider. This was a huge hit on tap last summer – we could not keep up with keg orders. We’re really excited to now offer Strawberry Ciderita in bottles at ANBL.
What’s with the name, “Ed’s Garage and Tap Room”?
Kind of a funny story…this building was a garage originally, which many of the locals will remember. We wanted to create a relaxed atmosphere where people can unwind, listen to my vinyl record collection, or some local music, maybe enjoy a board game, while lounging on our retro furniture. The other reason is a lot of the things we brought over here have been in my garage at home for years! Not the least of which is my 1968 BSA Starfire Motorcycle.
Ed’s Garage and Tap Room is located at 38 Main Street in Fredericton.
